MS Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project Sponsor Free Legal Clinic for Domestic Violence Victims

(Vicksburg, Miss.) – The Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence (MCADV) and the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project (MVLP) are collaborating with Haven House Family Shelter in Vicksburg, Miss., to hold a free legal clinic for victims of domestic violence, on Friday, September 29, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. After registering by phone at 601-882-5001 or online at, clients who are eligible for services can make appointments to receive free legal advice regarding divorce, custody, what to expect in a legal proceeding, what their rights are, etc.
MVLP’s attorneys will also offer advice over the phone during clinic hours, provided clients have registered and made appointments to do so. This resource is especially useful for domestic violence survivors who are unable to attend the clinic in person.

In 2016, MVLP served approximately 2,300 Mississippi residents through referrals, direct representation, advice and legal clinics. Clinic participants are paired with dedicated and professional pro bono attorneys, many of whom have their own practices around the state or work for larger firms and corporations. “According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline’s report, 36% of Mississippi domestic violence victims who contacted the hotline in 2016 were in need of legal advocacy or legal representation,” said Wendy Mahoney, Executive Director of Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “With this clinic, we want to work to increase victims’ access to meaningful legal services.”

About MVLP
The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project (MVLP) is a 501© 3 legal nonprofit entity, which partners with the Mississippi Bar Association and the Legal Services Corporation to provide free legal services to low-income residents of Mississippi, for more than thirty years. Founded on the belief that everyone should have access to courts, MVLP’s early efforts of reaching those in need were accomplished exclusively through directly representing clients. MVLP currently assists clients with civil legal matters, primarily in the following areas: uncontested divorces, emancipations, simple wills, adoptions, guardianships, name changes, birth certificate corrections, child support contempt matters, child support modifications, conservatorships and visitation matters.

About Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence
MCADV is a statewide resource on domestic violence issues. We provide support for member shelter programs though training, technical assistance and capacity building; advocate for public policy that supports victims; and seek to change societal attitudes and beliefs through awareness and prevention activities in communities throughout Mississippi. MCADV does not provide direct services for victims of domestic violence but supports the thirteen member shelter programs that offer services throughout Mississippi. We can help victims to find the support they need in their local communities.
